Every year, right around the time we’re digging out our coziest blankets and noticing that first dusting of snow on the porch rail, the same thought crosses many of our minds: Is my home prepared for winter?
It’s a fair question — and one we hear often from friends, neighbors, and longtime customers across Michigan.
Plumbing:
Cold weather puts pipes through quite the workout. If you’ve got plumbing running through crawl spaces or up against exterior walls, a little insulation can go a long way. I always tell folks: disconnect the hoses, check those outdoor spigots, and if the forecast looks especially icy, let a faucet drip overnight. It seems small, but it keeps water moving and helps prevent frozen lines.
Electrical:
With our days getting shorter, lights stay on longer and families plug in just about everything that brings comfort. It’s worth taking a few minutes to check cords and outlets for wear. If your breaker panel has been acting touchy or tripping more than usual, winter is a smart time to have someone look it over. And for safety’s sake, make sure your outdoor walkways are well-lit — especially on those slick, snowy evenings.
HVAC:
Your furnace becomes the unsung hero of the season. Swap out that filter, give the area around the unit a little breathing room, and make sure the vents inside aren’t blocked by furniture. A quick tune-up before deep winter arrives can save you both stress and money. Think of it as giving your system a head start before the real cold settles in.
A bit of preparation now means a warmer, safer, easier winter later. And remember — just like any good neighbor would — we’re here if you need a hand.
